What I always wanted.
Finally Making a House Feel Like Home
Moving house is exciting. Decorating it is often the easy part—at least in theory.
For Liam and Mel, life had other plans.
After moving from London to their Victorian home near Bristol's Chocolate Factory a few years ago, they had every intention of redecorating from top to bottom. But as often happens, life moved faster than the to-do list. A new baby arrived, Liam's consultancy business grew rapidly, and weekends became filled with family life rather than decorating.
The project was always on the list, but it never reached the top.
For Mel, there was one thing she simply couldn't ignore. She had never liked the colours throughout the house. They weren't terrible—they just didn't feel like them. After living with them for years, it was finally time to create a home that reflected their own style.
When I arrived, it quickly became clear that changing the colour was only part of the job.
Like many Victorian properties, there were settlement cracks above doorways and around the house that needed careful attention. The newer rear extension also showed the normal signs of drying and settlement, with fine cracks appearing in the plaster that required stabilising and repairing before decorating could begin.
Elsewhere, years of wear had taken their toll. Old caulk around the skirting boards had failed, paint had begun to peel in places where the original surfaces hadn't been properly prepared, and previous decorating had left unfinished paintwork behind radiators and feature heating panels. Even the large rooflight above the kitchen had become difficult to reach and hadn't been properly cleaned for years.
As with every project, preparation came first.
Cracks were carefully opened, stabilised and repaired before being filled and sanded smooth. Failed caulk was removed and replaced throughout, damaged areas were made good, loose paint was stripped back, and every surface was prepared to create a finish that would both look beautiful and stand the test of time.
The project included the entrance hall, staircase, landing, dining room, kitchen and ceilings throughout—spaces that connect the entire home and set the tone for everyday living.
The transformation came together through colour.
Mel had chosen a palette she had imagined since moving into the house: elegant shades from Farrow & Ball paired with warm, authentic heritage colours that perfectly complemented the character of the Victorian property. The result was a home that felt lighter, calmer and unmistakably their own.
By the time the final coat had dried, the house hadn't simply been redecorated—it finally felt like home.
One of the most rewarding parts of projects like this is helping busy families complete something they've wanted to do for years. Sometimes all that's needed is someone to step in, solve the problems behind the paint, and bring the vision they've been carrying for so long to life.
